I have Mac OS X High Sierra 10.13.2 and Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 4.5.02036 does not work. It installs but every time I need to establish a VPN it fails at 'activating vpn adapter'. After a while it says the connection is unsuccessful. Any insight would be much appreciated. Looking to understand as my university tech support is slow to respond at best Running MacOS High Sierra (10.13.1)on MacBook Pro.Cisco Anyconnect v.3.1x worked perfectly until a couple of weeks ago.No longer working I start the app, see that VPN adapter is being loaded. Connect with my universi. AnyConnect VPN crashing on MAC Sierra Client will start but when I click the Connect button, it consistently crashes. Also, when booting sometimes it causes the OS to reboot (crashes the OS).

Installing the VPN Client

  1. Download the AnyConnect VPN client for macOS 11.0 (Big Sur), macOS 10.15 (Catalina), or macOS 10.14 - 10.13 (Mojave to High Sierra).
  2. In your Downloads folder, double-click the file you just downloaded to open it. An icon will appear on the desktop called AnyConnect, and a separate window will open.
  3. Double-click on AnyConnect.mpkg to run the installer, then follow the steps to complete the installation. NOTE: We recommend you un-check everything (Web Security, Umbrella, etc) except for the VPN and the Diagnostic and Reporting Tool (DART). This will give you a minimal install. The other features are not supported so there's no need to install them.
    • Starting with macOS 10.13 High Sierra: During the installation, you will be prompted to enable the AnyConnect software extension in the System Preferences -> Security & Privacy pane. The requirement to manually enable the software extension is an operating system requirement.

Starting the VPN Client

  1. In your Applications folder, go to the Cisco folder and double-click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. Enter vpn.uci.edu in the Ready toConnect to field, then press the Connect button.
  3. Select your desired connection profile from the Group drop-down menu:
    • UCIFULL – Route all traffic through the UCI VPN.
      • IMPORTANT: Use UCIFULL when accessing Library resources.
    • UCI – Route only campus traffic through the UCI VPN. All other traffic goes through your normal Internet provider.
  4. Enter your UCInetID and password, then click OK.
  5. A banner window will appear. Click Accept to close that window. You are now connected!

Is the Cisco AnyConnect VPN compatible with Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11)?

The current version of the Cisco AnyConnect client available through WebStore (4.8.03052) is officially supported and compatible with Mac OS X versions that support 64-bit applications including Mac OS versions 10.13 (High Sierra), 10.14 (Mojave), and 10.15 (Catalina). As a 64-bit application, with updates for the security changes in Mac OS 10.15, this version should be compatible with future operating systems Apple releases. Mac OS 10.12 users can use version 4.7 if version 4.8 does not work.

Mac OS versions older than 10.12 are not supported. The AnyConnect software versions needed to use Mac OS 10.8 or earlier have known security issues and are no longer being updated by Cisco.

Additionally, when you connect to campus with the VPN it is the same as if your computer is attached to the wired or WiFi network on campus. The campus acceptable use policy applies to any computer connected to campus, and requires the computer to be running an OS currently supported by the vendor. Apple normally only provides security patches for the three most recent versions of their OS. For example when Mac OS 10.15 came out, Apple stopped patching Mac OS 10.12, and only provides security patches for Mac OS 10.13, 10.14, and 10.15 so no computer with older software should connect to campus via the VPN.
